NPMA Releases 2024 Spring & Summer Bug Barometer

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has released its Spring & Summer 2024 Bug Barometer, and it looks like there’s a good chance Maine homeowners may see ants and ticks earlier in the year than usual. What’s more, above-average rainfall could cause the mosquito population to explode.  Today, we’re going to take a closer look at the pests our local pest control specialists anticipate seeing in the next few weeks (or sooner) and how we can help property owners in Dresden, Chelsea, and Boothbay Harbor, as well as throughout our service area keep these pests away.

Carpenter Ants

Unfortunately, these wood-destroying pests are a big problem for Maine homeowners, even though they remain largely dormant during the winter months. Once spring hits, it’s normal to see the large black ants crawling up trees, trailing across the yard, or, worse, foraging inside the house. Since experts are predicting an unseasonably warm start here in New England, it only makes sense that these ants and other types of ants will be out in force sooner than we might like.

Ticks

Even though the weather was a mixed bag last month, we’ve had a moderate winter. Which, combined with a warmer-than-usual spring, you can count on ticks being a problem before you know it. In fact, it’s very likely they’re already on the move. And it’s not just the infamous, Lyme disease-spreading deer tick either. Other types of ticks have also been on the rise over the past few years as well.

If you haven’t already started, we highly recommend starting up with the tick checks after spending time outdoors.

Mosquitoes

Another biting pest to contend with during the spring and summer months, mosquitoes are expected to be wicked busy biting and reproducing once the warmer temperatures stick around. More than annoying, pesky mosquitoes are likely to drive you indoors with their itchy bites. It’s also important to note that infected mosquitoes in Maine can transmit West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
