How to Keep Pests from Ruining Your Fourth of July Fun

As we gear up for the Fourth of July and look forward to all the summer barbecues, there's nothing more annoying than having pests crash the party. Mosquitoes, ants, wasps, and flies are just some unwanted guests that can spoil the fun. Here’s how to keep your gatherings pest-free and enjoyable all summer long.

Cleanliness is key

Remove food sources
Ensure that food is covered and sealed. Pests are attracted to open food and sugary drinks, so use containers with lids and clean up spills immediately.

Take care of the trash
Keep trash cans covered and away from the dining area. Pick up used plates, empty drink cans, and other trash as you go and regularly empty trash cans to avoid attracting pests

Clean the grill
After cooking out, clean the grill thoroughly to remove food residues that attract insects.

Maintain your yard

Keep your lawn mowed
Mow your lawn every week to keep the grass at length. This will reduce hiding places for pests.

Trim bushes and shrubs
Use pruning shears to trim back bushes and shrubs to allow light to penetrate those otherwise dark areas and make them less hospitable to pests.

Haul away yard debris

Old tires, tree branches, burn piles, and other yard debris offer plenty of places for insects and rodents to take shelter. Remove anything that doesn’t need to be there to make your yard less appealing.

Implement a solid mosquito control plan

We have a few suggestions to help you discourage mosquitoes from getting too comfortable on your property. First, remove every trace of standing water on your property that these biting pests could use for reproduction. Second, unclog your gutters and make sure water is diverted away from the foundation. Third and final, sign up for seasonal mosquito treatments from Advanced Pest Solutions and let our team drastically reduce the mosquito population for you.

Discourage ants, wasps and other insects

Eliminate potential food sources
As we mentioned above, insects will take advantage of our spills and crumbs, and ants and wasps are no exception. To prevent a pest takeover, be sure to clean up your outdoor dining area. Sugary drinks and sweet desserts left out will only draw these bugs over. You might also consider planting less flowering plants that attract wasps.

Seal entry points
Even if you only entertain outdoors, there’s a good chance ants and other crawling insects will find a way indoors. To prevent that, be sure to seal all potential entry points outside of your home.
