Do You Have A Carpenter Ant Problem In Your Home?

Have you spotted large black ants in your home or on your property this summer? If it’s not protected, there’s a good chance you have because carpenter ants are very active in Maine right now. Of course, there’s the possibility you already have these ants infesting your home and don’t even know it. Let’s dive in and see if we can help you determine whether or not you have a carpenter ant problem and if so, what to do about it.

Why Maine homeowners should be on the look out for carpenter ant activity

It might sound like we’re being a bit dramatic when we say every homeowner in Maine should be on the look out for carpenter ant activity but we’ll say it anyway. That’s because this type of ant is more than a nuisance pest like odorous house ants in that they are capable of infesting homes and weakening building materials with their tunneling. The resulting damage ranges from minor cosmetic issues to more serious structural problems (if the infestation is left un-treated for a while).

Carpenter ant damage or water damage – it’s hard to tell the difference

Sometimes it’s tricky to identify carpenter ant damage because it resembles water damage. Also, carpenter ants are attracted wood that is damaged by water (it’s easier to tunnel through) so you’re not always sure if it’s one, the other, or a combination of both.

Signs of carpenter ants

The best way to identify carpenter ant problems is to know what to look for. In addition to finding these big ants crawling around outside (pay close attention to trees with holes or other imperfections), keep an eye out for:

  • Piles of fine sawdust, also known as frass, on the floor under pinholes in walls, under window sills and baseboards

  • Doors that seem to stick

  • Windows that are swollen or hard to open

  • Floors that are sagging

  • Walls that are bulging out
